Thesaurus of Resource Description

Version: 1.0
Date: 2002
Midas Unit: Archive / Source Type
Description: FISH members and peers have developed the content of this terminology. A cross section of the UK Sites and Monuments Records (SMR) community has reviewed the scope, contents and terminology. The comments that were received formed the basis of this list.

The list was generated using a grant obtained from the SMSMA (Sharing Museums Skills Millennium Award). The National Trust would like to thank the SMSMA for supporting the production of this standard.

The standard is split up into two class lists. The main class list is called Resource Type. This list is based on the Type of the source item, being what the item recorded is i.e. a photograph of a plan would be recorded as a photograph, with its contents qualified and described in accompanying descriptive fields. This main list is augmented by a secondary class list called Resource Format and Material. This allows for format descriptors, covering the medium used to store the information.

This allows for improved indexing of archive against the format and material of the resource For instance: a Photograph (Resource Type) Could be held as: Color Print (Resource Format and Material) Compact Disk (Resource Format and Material) Colour Slide (Resource Format and Material ). The terminology is broad including sources or bibliographic references e.g. report, volume; archives that could be associated with a site e.g. photograph, plan; resources that could be associated with a site e.g. web site, teachers pack.

Terms in the thesaurus have been mapped to the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative 'Type' list and the Art and Architecture Thesaurus.

The list owners can provide advice on compliance to this list.
